Public Health
River Tees Port Health Authority is responsible for the enforcement of infectious disease controls through shipping activity. In 2005, the World Health Organisation (WHO) revised the International Health Regulations to include new and emerging risks to the country such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and re-emerging risks such as Tuberculosis (TB).
Powers relating to public health controls on ships in England are contained in the Public Health (Ships) Regulations 1979 and Public Health (Ships) (Amendment) Regulations 2007. The regulations provide for notifications of health conditions on board, inspection of ships, issuing of sanitation certificates and authorise measures to be taken for preventing a danger to public health.
