Products of Animal Origin

Moving goods into GB from the EU
Consignments of POAO fall into three categories, High Risk, Medium Risk, and Low Risk; high risk includes live animals and germinal products, medium risk includes raw meat and meat preparation, fish and dairy products made with raw milk, low risk goods include pasteurised dairy products and POAO ambient stable at room temperature.

For further information on risk categories, please refer to the UK Governments checklists.

For high and medium risk imports that originated in the EU you’ll need to get a health certificate from the EU country of export. You may need an official importer declaration for certain products – the health certificate will tell you when you need one. You may also need an import licence or authorisation. Further information is available here.

For all low risk imports, you’ll need a commercial document. You may also need an import licence or authorisation.

If in doubt, please refer to the Government Guidance which details which documents are required for the risk category of goods being brought in.

Moving goods into GB from the outside the EU
To import live animals or animal products from non-EU countries into Great Britain, you need to:

  • find the Risk Category for the commodity you’re importing
  • follow the sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) rules for that import risk category
