Product NOT of Animal Origin

Specific controls are in place for certain food and feed products, not of animal origin, from specified countries to reduce known human or animal health risks. Where these controls exist, there is usually a requirement for Port Health Authorities to conduct documentary checks and sampling for analysis or examination.

The Official Feed and Food Controls (England) Regulations 2009
The Official Feed and Food Controls (England) Regulations 2009 apply to products of non-animal origin being imported into England from third countries (non-EU countries). This includes foods such as vegetables, cereals, nuts, mushrooms, fruit, and products made from these. It also applies to animal feedstuffs including feed materials, compound feedstuffs and feed additives.

Imported feed and food should meet the same or equivalent hygiene and compositional standards as feed and food produced in the UK or other EU Member States. Further information on these requirements and the relevant legislation can be found on the Food Standards Agency’s website www.food.gov.uk

Port Health Authorities have enforcement powers to perform official controls on these products. This may include inspecting, sampling and detaining suspect consignments.
