Aflatoxin Risk Products
Commission Regulation (EC) No 884/2014 imposes special conditions governing the import of certain foodstuffs from certain third countries due to contamination risk by aflatoxins.
Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins or toxic substances, produced from moulds. They appear in the food chain as a result of fungal infection of crops, either being directly eaten by humans or by being used as livestock feed. Examples of the types of foods affected by aflatoxins are certain groundnuts, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds and pistachios.
Consignments of foodstuffs referred to in Article I of Regulation (EC) No 884/2014 may only be imported into Teesport in accordance with procedures laid down in the legislation, these include;
- Health Certificate
- Results of sampling and analysis
The health certificate shall only be valid for imports not later than four months from the date of issue and the sampling and analysis must be performed in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 152/2009 for aflatoxins in feed and with Regulation (EC) No 401/2006 in food.
Importers bringing any food or feed into Teesport under this Regulation must give prior notification of the estimated date and time of physical arrival of the consignment. For this, Part 1 of the Common Entry Document (CED) should be completed and sent to River Tees Port Health Authority at least one working day prior to the physical arrival of the consignment.
Sampling and analysis will be carried out on a percentage of consignments depending on the type of foodstuff. Official controls will be performed within 15 working days from the moment the consignment is offered for import and physically available for sampling.
All costs resulting from official controls, including sampling, analysis, and any measures taken following non-compliance, shall be borne by the food business operator. Additional charges may apply from the port operator to produce a container for examination and for the storage of the goods. Food business operators should contact the port operator for clarification of these charges.
